Art + Physical Education

One of the largest and most popular activity days held at our school is Sports Day. The students are separated into four teams of ‘houses’ and remain in these houses from their first day at MUIDS until they graduate. Students work within their houses to earn points through various activities and sporting events held throughout the year, many of which happen on Sports Day itself.

A greatly popular and fun part of the Sports Day event is the cheerleading, where the student house teams perform choreographed cheers complete with costumes, props, and great theatrics. Unfortunately, these props and decorations that they spend a great deal of time creating for the event are quickly forgotten and discarded following the performances. This year, the art department worked with the physical education department to provide the students with an opportunity to create a work of art that could celebrate the spirit of their house and stand the test of time.

We organized a ‘House Banner Painting’ activity and provided each of the house teams with a large canvas banner and paint to showcase their house spirit. Guest faculty judges ranked the banners based on an analytic rubric and points were awarded accordingly during the Sports Day event.
It is our hope that these banners will be displayed within the school indefinitely, providing the event with a means of generating not only the great sense of school culture it has become known for, but also acknowledging previous classes efforts and building a sense of history as we look back at the works of these former House champions for years to come.
