Cultivating Creativity: The Green Thumb Ninjas
I am always looking for ways to welcome additional disciplines into the activities we are exploring in the art room. One such endeavor was the creation of ‘The Green Thumb Ninjas,’ an after-school club that centered around activities that could incorporate both art and science.
Collaborating with my colleagues from the science department, we designed a series of activities aimed at nurturing both artistic expression and scientific curiosity among our students. The club became a experimental and fun space for our students to appreciate nature through various hands-on experiences.
1. Essential Oils Extravaganza: We began the year with an Essential Oils activity, where students participated in the process of distillation using materials sourced directly from nature. In the science lab, we transformed flowers, coffee, lavender, and other organic materials into fragrant essential oils. These oils were then incorporated into our artistic endeavors as students used them as a medium to create watercolor paintings on bookmarks, infusing their artwork with the scents of the oils.

2. Seedling Secrets: Moving outdoors, we introduced the Mystery Seed project, cultivating small plants on the school balcony. Each student received a mystery seed for an edible plant. The mystery around what the seed would produce created a sense of anticipation and wonder. With a meticulously crafted and disciplined watering schedule, students took on the responsibility of nurturing their plants, and nurturing their growth firsthand.

3. Pottery Plant Paradigm: To culminate our botanical adventures, students immersed themselves in the art of ceramics, crafting personalized pots to house their plants. From seed to sprout to pottery, each step of the journey worked toward bringing the disciplines of art and science together. As they proudly took home their green companions, (to be kept or eaten), they carried with them the experience of artistic exploration paired with scientific discovery.

REFLECTION
Finding opportunities for interdisciplinary collaboration can be challenging; primarily due to the way that the school schedule is arranged and the lack of extra time within regularly scheduled classes to really “play” or delve into activities that stray from the class curriculums. The Green Thumb Ninjas found ways to offer students a blend of science and art outside the time restrictions imposed by our traditional curriculums by utilizing the after-school club period. Moreover, the club provided a chance for me to collaborate with teachers from other departments, fostering bonds that enriched both professional and personal growth. In essence, The Green Thumb Ninjas exemplified the power of collaboration, creativity, and community in education, benefitting both students and teachers alike. I found that the project was successful in cultivating curiosity, imagination and some delicious edible plants along the way 🙂
